25 Day Challenge Intern Course
The Getting Started Guide Summary
The following summary I sthe
step-by-step guide including the homework steps that you'll be needing to do
LESSON 1: Discovering Your Passions
Browse the
following sites to decide what major topics of interest you could imagine
spending lots of time online interacting with others about because you have a
geneuine interest. It needn't be a hobby, it could be a work interest or a
cause or even an illness.
http://groups.yahoo.com
http://www.meetup.com/topics
http://index.browseworlds.com
We are
looking for major areas primarily (eg Cooking or Dogs or ArtsnCrafts)
You should
also note sub communities that you are interested in eg if you have a specific
interests in French Cooking and Poodles.
Homework 1: Send in via
email a list of 3 to 5 broad topics and
also the sub communities for allocation
LESSON 2: Researching Your Passions
Having
been allocated Interest areas it's now time to research them
We want to
find topics that we can create communities
that you can imagine 1,500 people will want to be part of an online community
participating in adding and viewing videos, posting on the forums, contributing
and reading blogs, articles, reviews and polls etc. It would be reasonable
expect that to get 1,500 we'd need to have 20,000+ people around the world
interested in the topic
Finding Sub Communities
1.
Go to
http://co-opworld.com/allocations.htm to review your
allocation unless you have been notified by mail.
2.
The topics
in the top section tend to be smaller sub-communities that will just be added
to your list for the next stage of the process (SpyFu research to generate the
leads). If a topic is in yellow it has been allocated to you by yourself. If it is in green you
3.
If the
topic is being done as part of a team , go to the forum http://www.cagorainterns.com and interact with the others on
the team to organize a meeting time to do the following process as a group. You
may want to volunteer to be the Team Leader, if the group does not already
have one. You should have Excel and a web microphone to do this.
4.
Go to
http://co-opworld.com/interns and find the data set for your area
5.
Work through each of the tabs
and either write
down or copy and paste into word or the first spreadsheet the names of topics
that you think would support a community
6.
Ignore
localization (eg Boston Real Estate)
7. Go To http://:index.browseworlds.com and note communities that have already been listed there to see if any extras make sense. These will tend to have been derived from http://groups.yahoo.com and may or may not have had extra research done.
8. You can then jump to Step 11 or if you want to be more thorough you can use steps 9 to 10. These should not be necessary.
9.
Go to http://groups.yahoo.com
and type in the topic and then explore within it, to see if any other
topic that would make communitie stand out to you. Add them to your list.
10. Go to http://www.google.com and search for Directories, Forums,
Guides, Categories, Community etc by
searching for: 'Cooking Directories' , 'Cooking Forum' etc. Visit the sites
that look like they might have useful info and see whether they have any good
suggestions on categories. You should record for later these websites. When we
get to the 'Community Building' phase we will want to get you to contact these
as prospects and ghet them tagged to you.
11. Go To http://www.wordpot.com and search the frequency of your terms.
First type in your general term (eg Gardening) and note all the counts of
phrases on your list, and then search each of the individual terms. If working
as a team you may want to divide up this work.
12. Highlight the 30 to 40 communities
that have the highest counts, or ones that you think will be popular and have
people likely to want to advertise in a community of that topic.
Homework 2: Submit your list with the counts by email
for review

back and suggest the order or approach but hopefully after this process you'll
have at least 50 leads across at least 30 communities that you will be able to
approach.
