1. Determine list of businesses to approach by phone

Develop a list of possible businesses to approach.

It is a good idea to separate the list into a WARM market and COLD market lists, where the warm market ones are business you know and the cold market are cold calls.

In developing the list it is a good idea to identify businesses that you feel are likely to be receptive to the "community" aspect of the Co-OpWorld project, or have demonstrated a willingness to spend money on display ads in the print or Internet Yellow Pages or on other local paid advertising.

  • Merchants with whom you have a relationship or are personally known
  • “Degrees of Separation” relationship
  • You are a customer/buyer of their services
  • Merchants who are already advertising are great prospects

BEST Prospects are those who are already advertising that are part of your warm market!

Real Estate Agents, Car Dealers, Florists, Hairdressers are some examples of categories we expect to result in good levels of participation. You can view a more complete list by reviewing the main categories in the Local Community Directory by visiting your LocalWorld website and reviewing each main category on the front page of your local world (eg Business, Shopping)

You may find the following support documents of assistance in preparing your lists:

2. Make Calls (suggested script provided)

If the call is to a warm market the script should be adapted to be something that is appropriate for your existing relationship with the person.

Use the “What do you Think of this” Approach with your warm market, regardless of whether they are already advertising

For a cold call the following style of script should deliver good results:

" Hi,

My name is YOUR NAME and I'm working on a community service project called Co-OpWorld that is encouraging people to support local business.

We are creating a Local Community Directory here in LOCALWORLD and are wanting to put in as many businesses as possible with free detailed listings.

I would like permission to create a listing for BUSINESS NAME and then send you an email with the details so you can edit your account username and password. You'll also be able to update your listing at anytime via the Internet. The Local Community Directory listing will always remain a free service.  We do have products available for local businesses like targeted internet advertising  for those business owners that would like to expand on their current advertising promotions.

What I will need is an email address and your name so that we can include it in the email to verify that we have had permission to mail you the instructions."

Gather the data and then thank them for participating in the project.

Make sure you get:

  • Business Name
  • Contact Name
  • Confirm the listing category
  • and ask if they have any suggestions for the ad title or keywords
